I'm just reading the book by John Ringo at the moment and OMG what a scary book it is too... There are even some videos that will start airing in October (I think on Sky)...
OK, the story is this... in 2018 there is a mutation of the bird flu which leads it to become human to human transmittable. The whole world comes apart and the US pretty much drags all the soldiers in the middle east back to the states to handle all the riots and stuff by the survivors of what they are calling "The Plague".
But they don't bring back ALL the soldiers... there is a hell of a lot of equipment in the middle east so they move it to huge stockpiles and leave a company behind to look after the stuff. The story revolves around one of these companies who are left with defending one of these stockpiles and how they finally made their way home.
Let me just say if it really happens this way (and I honestly can see this possibly happening) then it could blast us back into being hunter/gatherers (which isn't what happens in the story but I'm not gonna say what actually does happen.
Read the book... it's done in a "blog style" by the fictitious leader, Bandit Six. I don't normally read stuff like this but I like John Ringo's books so I thought I'd try it as I had ran out of things to read... it has a centurion's head on the front so I originally thought it was set in the past but it's set in the future instead.
