OK... so with my server being painfully slow I added a new graphics card to replace the onboard graphics... Put the card in, swithced on and BEEEP, BEEEEP....
CRACK!.
That crack was the power supply blowing up... looks like a capacitor blew... diode in the bridge rectifier must have shorted. It would explain why my server has been dodgy recently if the power was unstable.
OK... so after nicking my old laptop PSU (it's an external brick) I got the server up again... turned off the onboard graphics and what happens.... just a single "_" at the top left of the screen.. DAMNIT!
Had to kill the bios and then do all manners of things to get the new card recognised.
So finally have everything plugged together and I plug in my headset... start playing music and the sound is really tinny... and faint. Cue scratch head time. WTF... There is nothing coming throught the headphones at all so where is the sound coming from... WTF... it's coming out of the MICROPHONE????
If you think I plugged into the wrong socket, think again. The audio is coming out of the mic socket. I've tried reinstalling the drivers several times but the same thing happens.
Also, if I open the sound dialogue in the control pannel the sound controls are greyed out. This is so confusing that I'm totally stumped.
Anyone else come across this weird problem?
