[EG NeoMorph]

I've been after making a completely (and I mean totally) silent server for a number of years now. I'm not just talking "Below the level of hearing threshold"... I'm talking so quiet that you can read a book sitting next to it and not hear it at all.

The reason I want this is because the server sits in the living room on my hi-fi stack in a cool black cube. I thought I had it sorted but unfortunately the seek noise from the server just totally pees me off when I'm watching TV. So I now have think I've got it sorted...

SOLID STATE HARDRIVE.

Just ordered a 60GB SSD... Now in the world of terrabyte drives this is miniscule but SSD's are still expensive at the moment. But it will allow me to download my TV episodes and then back them up to a terrabyte backup drive weekly once I've finished watching them. I'm still watching the 350mb sized vids at the moment (as I don't have anything that can playback mkv HD files yet) so the 60GB should be sufficient for now. When I do get something that will playback the mkv files the prices on SSD's will have dropped so I will be able to get a larger drive. Good news is that I won't get a head crash on the server now lol...

But am I tempting the NeoJinx?

At the moment the bloody thing looks like a nuke went off and it got turned into Fallout 4. Junk everywhere, old tech stuff, bits of computers etc. The only reason I'm doing the website and not the flat is that winter is my "down time". Pain makes it impossible to work.

Here's hoping to having a good summer (unlike the last two years). Drought for two years then we had the water board declaring that the next year there would be forced water rationing and then what happens... more rain than we have had in years. Good for the reservoirs but bloody awful for my joints lol.

I am determined that I am gonna finish it this year though.

Well my new hard drive arrived this morning but I still haven't been able to install the sucker due to my existing hard drive going into a sulk. The machine kept freezing up and when it did it meant that I'd have to go from my bedroom and into the darn living room, hit the "Go Faster" button and go back to the bedroom again.

After the third backup failed I realised the drive was screwy so I set it for a surface scan and repair... and it took ages. Seems fine now but I wonder what I lost in the process this time. This is the second drive I've had crap out on me (I sent the first one back and got a replacement).

I do know that I have had good dealings with Samsung drives before this but recently Samsung is entering the sucking zone. Monitors that buzz, hard drives that crash a lot... I think Samsung is now off my preferred buying list.

The new drive has a much higher G threshold... to cause it to break you would have to subject it to over 1500G's... That's like MENTAL... Oh and this drive is so damned small. It's in what I would call a 1/3 height 2.5" aluminium case. Looks more like a large credit card than a hard drive. This is gonna be the way hard drives are going to go, I'm sure of it.

Hopefully I will have better luck with this drive.

Just an update...

The server does everything I want from in now... automation response is instant now so that's a big plus. Did have some system hangs after a while but fixed that after running a registry tuning and error checking program.

Solid state harddrives are bloody awesome. My server now make ZERO noise. That's not just "below hearing" it's totally 0db as there are no moving parts... well other than the keyboard and trackball lol.
