Well I just read why Red Faction Guerilla went third person...
"We have a lot of video early on [of RFG] in FPS mode," said producer Rick White to 1UP during a hands-on session with the game in Las Vegas a few weeks ago. "I came into the picture without really the history of Red Faction so it easy for me to say I'm just not seeing why it's fun, guys, it's just not making any sense to me. So let's just pull it back and see what happens. I took a lot of flack for that."
Before working out the game design, Volition was focused on crafting the technology that would ultimately drive the game, Geo Mod 2.0. This technology is what allows players to destroy the buildings in any fashion they choose. As the technology was finalized and the "game" part came into focus, that's when White considered moving the game away from its original camera positioning.
"We started looking at the frustration factor," he explained. "Players [were] getting frustrated in usability testing because in first person you just didn't have that POV [point of view]-- you're constantly dying and you didn't know why were dying. So what we did was we pulled that camera back and it kind of changed the vision and dynamics of that game at that point."
Not everyone was (or still is) totally on board with it.
"I still have guys on the team who've been at Volition since day one and they still [say] it should've been in first person," he said. "I'm like 'yeah, but we have something special right here and I don't think it'd be as special if it was in first person.'"
So basically they bought in a guy who didn't know about the original games and said first person wasn't fun and overruled the long running staff at Volition. The whole "I'm just not seeing why it's fun, guys" sounds like someone who missed out the fun of playing Red Faction and just wanted it to be like the current fad of third person games. And admitting that the staff STILL don't like it in third person just says a lot about Rick White... it says he doesn't listen to the ones who know what Red Faction truly was about. Oh and if his point of view is that having exploding buildings and stuff gets you killed without knowing why then why does Battlefield: Bad Company work so well in first person.
Personally, Rick White is not my favourite guy atm... I'll wait until I get hands on with the full game for my final decision.
Lets just hope this fad doesn't ever affect games like Far Cry or COD... god I'd cry if that happened....
