Well I think I've nailed my new gaming PC bits. In the end I decided against buying a bundle as I want one that is gonna last me a while (like my XP2800 has done).

Here is the list:-

  • Mobo - Asus P5Q Pro Intel P45 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
  • Memory - GeIL Black Dragon 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 PC2-8500C5 1066MHz Dual Channel Kit
  • PSU - Hiper 880W HPU-4M880-PE 85% Efficiency, w/8P PCI-E, UK + EU
  • GFX - Gainward ATI Radeon HD 4850 "Golden Sample" 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express) - Retail (X2 in Crossfire config)
  • CPU - Intel Quad Core Q6600 95Watt G0 Stepping 4 x 2.40Ghz 8Mb Cache 1066 FSB Quad Core Processor - Retail
  • Cooler - Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Socket 775 CPU Cooler
  • Hard Drives - 2 x Western Digital Caviar Blue 500Gb 16Mb Cache Hard Drive SATAII 300MB/s <8.9ms 7200rpm (In performance RAID mode)

It's not gonna be cheap but it WILL last me a while. I got a whole bunch of advice that ATI is actually better than Nvidia so this is gonna be my first non-Nvidia system... The research on this system was a bitch and a half.

Edit: I'm still researching about the crossfire speed things... not done Crossfire so I'm getting baffled by science...

Hmm you should get an Antec 1200 case. I heard those ATi's get hot (hotter than nVidia) and the Antec 1200 has about 6 fans on it I think. You can also install more on the side of the case right next to the whole Mobo and stuff just in case.

Other than that, your setup now officially rapes mine, lol.

Oh and Crossfire'd 4850's? Awesome.  Shocked

Well I have the money for my new PC but I still can't decide on what to go for... I'm now looking at the P5Q Deluxe for the mobo and a 4870 for the graphics card (and getting another next month when I get my money). There are just tooooooo many options that I just can't finalise my decision damnit. Do I save up a bit more and go for an i7 rig or stick with getting an older Q6600 setup that is good for overclocking.

I hate indecision... I think... I can't make up my mind though...  Undecided

Crysis was actually rather generic. The supersuit was a gimmick: your invisibility lasted enough for 8 - 10 steps, your superspeed lasted 1 to 1.5 seconds, and I forget the strength portion but I think it was only a handful of jumps at most before you have to let it recharge for a really long time. Crysis is about graphics over gameplay, which is what I think a big part of the current console generation is (minus the Wii, which is having different problems of its own right now).

Oh, and psychic AI ruined it, too.

Psychic AI is in every game it seems. It's just a bit more obvious in games where you get insta-killed.

Far Cry 2 doesn't have psychic AI... you can actually use tactics against the enemy by using distractions.

Apparently someone else mentioned that Crysis is poorly optimised which is why it takes an uber PC to run it. There is one other game that needs a good PC and that is Supreme Commander (which was crappily ported over to console). That's another game I put off buying until I got a decent PC.

The first game I will buy for the new PC is most definately gonna be Dawn of War II though...

its all about preference, ati has better anti-aliasing, nvidia has better texture filtering

Well I just ordered an ATI HD4550. Basically it's just barely under twice as fast as my old nVidia 7600 GS, runs cooler, cost only $39.99 with free shipping... looks like I can now turn the graphics up from the bare minimum now  Cheesy
