Shhh. My common sense is tingling.

« on: May 17, 2009, 04:41:09 PM »

Results:
A.) Make Steve comfortable: You help your friend to the couch and and tell him you’ll tend to him until he passes. He tells you that he’s thankful he has a friend like you. An hour later you help him to the bathroom as he has now lost most of his strength and while you wait in the hallway, Steve tells you that he’s sorry and then starts to choke. Silence reigns. You slam your shoulder against the door until it gives in. Steve jumps out at you and bites your shoulder impossibly hard. You yell and force the zombie back into the bathroom, Jack pulls you away from the doorway and he’s suddenly covered in a  hail of blood as he blasts Steve’s head off. You look at your shoulder and notice that it’s bleeding profusely. Someone behind you says something and you turn around. You see Sabrina scream as blood splashes all over her. The last you ever see is a huge hole in your chest. The last thing you hear is a final gunshot ring out. DEAD

B.) Leave Steve outside: You tell Jack it’s a bad idea to leave a future zombie in the house. You roughly drag your friend out to the driveway and leave him there in the spotlight before heading back in the house. When Drew and Jackson return a few minutes later, you ask if Steve is still there and they inform you that they didn’t know he was outside. You run to the door to see for yourself that Steve is gone. Later that night, you’re on watch and sitting inside your bedroom staring out at the driveway.  Sudden movement catches your attention and you flip the switch to turn the spotlights on. The dusty road lights up and you see Steve standing there, staring directly at you even though the lights had to blind him. You open the window and take aim with the M1 until you notice several dozen other zombies come into view. Steve points up at you and the horde breaks into a dead run at the house. They get inside before you have time to alert everyone and you try to make a valiant stand in the armory but the waves ceaselessly come at you, like the entire nearby town was emptied just to come after you.  The bodies start piling up at the door and you pray that they will stop the zombies but they also serve as a barricade for your bullets and shells. As you reload the semi-auto shotgun, Steve crawls over the bodies and jumps on top of you, ripping into your exposed arm with his teeth. DEAD

C.) Shoot Steve outside: You go upstairs and reload the magazine. Once back on the ground floor, you haul Steve off the couch and practically drag him outside, where you force him to his knees and step away. You point the M1 at your friend and say you’re sorry. You squeeze the trigger and the bullet goes clean through his skull. Steve flops weirdly to the ground. You return to the house and ignore the screaming directed at you. Later that afternoon Jack enters your bedroom and tells you that they all agreed that you did the right thing but not in the right way. You retort by saying that Steve was already dead, that your act of kindness kept him from the agonizing pain of knowing that he would turn into one of those monsters and try to kill everyone there. ALIVE

D.) Shackle Steve in an empty barn: You tell Jack that it’s a bad idea to have a future zombie sitting around and that everyone will be safer if he was locked up somewhere outside so he can’t get loose when he turns. Jack says it would be easier if he was killed now but you reply that Steve is still human. He agrees and suggests one of the old barns that used to house some kind of livestock that wasn’t around anymore. The two of you carefully bring Steve to the barn that looks like it would cave in if a strong enough wind hit it but there’s literally no other place to lock him up at. The two of you place your friend gently against a vertical beam and clasp the manacles Jack brought with on Steve’s wrists. You return to the house, confident that the bindings will hold. ALIVE

The next day Drew and Jackson report that the perimeter is secure again and they don’t know how the zombies were able to bust through so quickly and quietly. Other than that, everyone leaves you pretty much alone for the next several days to deal with the loss of Steve, which is exactly what you don’t want considering you feel more alone then ever before.

One evening while eating dinner with the rest of the group, the radio (which is kept on at all times) comes to life and draws everyone’s attention.

“If there are any survivors listening to this, pay attention: On 4 July the Milwaukee and Chicago areas have been scheduled for cleansing by repeated carpet-bombing. Starting 6 July the United States Marine Corps will begin clearing the ruins out street by street. There is a brand new evacuation center located at Bohners Lake, south of Burlington, Wisconsin, where the National Guard is waiting for anyone who can make it there from 27 June through 4 July. I repeat: On 4 July the Milwaukee and Chicago areas...”

“Holy shit, they’re actually going to try this again?” Jack says.
“What do you mean?” you ask.
“He means,” Sabrina explains, “that the last evacuation centers were overrun within minutes.”
“I thought the government gave up on us and retreated to their bunkers,” Drew says.
“Well, we’re going, right?” you ask.
“Damn right we are, we’ve only got enough food and water for a few weeks at most. If the Marines are in on this, I know that evacuation center will hold. Besides, it’s only about 20 miles from here,” Jack says.
“You can’t be serious,” Sabrina says.
“You know I love you, babe, but I’m going with or without you. As for everyone else, you’re free to join me as I’m taking my truck out of here,” Jack says.

The plan is to go on July 2nd to make sure there’s at least a day to get there and so that you’ll have advance warning if it gets overrun. Your car and Jack’s truck will be the two vehicles used, with Jack and Sabrina in his truck and you, Drew, Jackson, and Frank in your car. The mood in the house is very anxious leading up to July and on the first of the month, Frank decides he has waited long enough and is going to go to the evacuation depot immediately. He tells you to give him the keys to the car and you decline. The small man walks away but comes back later with a revolver and waves it in your face until you give him the keys. You hand them over and he backs off until he’s out of your reach, where he turns and bolts for the front door. Drew shouts from the living room and a gunshot rings out. The front door opens and you hear Frank shouting at Drew, calling him “an ignorant fool!” You race into the living room and see Drew sitting on the floor with his back against the wall. He’s gasping for air and clutching his chest.

“He shot...me,” is the last thing the cop ever says.

You grab Drew’s shotgun and step out onto the porch to see Frank trying all the keys on the door. He notices you and drops the keys so he can bring the revolver up to point it directly at you.

“Don’t try to stop me! I’m doing this for the betterment of mankind! You fools can wait until tomorrow in this hellhole all you want! But me? I’m leaving right now!”

You slowly bring the shotgun up and aim it directly at the accountant.

Do you

A.) Fire.
B.) Let him go.

As the decision races through your mind and time seems to slow down, the decision is made for you: you hear the familiar sound of your M1 carbine firing and three bullet holes appear on Frank’s chest.

“How’s my brother?” Jackson shouts from upstairs.
“He’s gone,” you shout to the window.

Five more bullet holes appear on Frank’s torso.

July 2 rolls around. A small funeral was held for Drew while Jack and Jackson burned Frank’s corpse in the backyard. Even with two dead, the original plan sticks: two vehicles. Around noon Jack decides that it’s time to head for safety. All the food and weapons are split between the two groups and you and Jackson get in your car. Jack fires up the truck and takes the lead. At the end of the driveway, Jackson gets out of the passenger seat to open the gate and luckily there are no zombies around at all. The man gets back in your car and you mention the lack of zombies.

“They’re probably heading for that damn evac center.”

You quickly realize that you’ve never been on these back roads before but Jackson tells you he knows how to get to the lake because he’s been called out in this area several times before for a lot of reasons: spousal abuse, illegal fireworks, and even a drug bust that resulted in over $1.7 million in all types of drugs being confiscated. You vaguely remember reading about that bust in a local paper and seeing the image of a massive pile of drugs surrounded by police.

Jack takes a right turn at a stop sign.

“No, no, no, we’re supposed to go straight still. Shit! Get behind him and flash the headlights at him,” Jackson tells you. “Where is the damn walkie-talkie?!”

An image enters your mind, one of Sabrina putting the walkie-talkies into a bag that you remember was loaded into the truck.

Do you
A.) Turn right and flash the headlights at the truck.
B.) Turn right but follow the truck instead of trying to turn them around.
C.) Drive straight.

Because if they turned right and get ambushed by zombies, I don't want to be there when it happens.
