Don't get into the bad habit of over editing it too... One of John Ringo's books made me laugh with part of the Acknowledgements...
Tom Kratman and Julie Cochrane for expanding the vision of the Aldenata universe and the characters therein. And for telling me "It's done, John. Turn it in."
... so it's not just new writers that have a problem with editing ad-infinitum.

Having friends who will read it and make constructive criticisms (and not just saying it's good or it's crap) are necesssary.
There is one MAJOR problem that even seasoned writers have problems with... Continuitly. For example you kill off Fred in chapter 3 and in Chapter 5 he turns up again. You will be surprised at the number of times that happens and if you read some of the Author's Notes you find the Author thanking a friend for pointing out continuity errors.
