I can bench press 45 lbs in a couple reps before exhaustion. I'm not skinny, but I'm not strong.

Lower weights and a lot of reps is better anyways.

I think my one rep max is... 115. I normally rep about 70? 75? I don't remember. I only wiegh 111ish. Actually I'm going to weigh myself right now.

Yay I weigh 113. Anyways, make sure you have a spotter. And know that lowering the wieght to your chest is just as important as pushing it back up. Don't drop it instantly to your chest and bounce it right back up. Take it nice and easy.

I read that somewhere..

Doing it nice and slow, is more of a workout for your pecs and biceps.

I found that one area that I am REALLY weak on is pull-ups. I just can't do them, even when pushing out 100 push-ups was easy. When I was that fit I could only do like 8-10 pull-ups no matter what exercises I did to build up my muscles and what is worse is that I only weighed 8 stone at the time. I'm guessing it was another symptom of the damaged protein chains around my joints which causes joint hypermobility.

Thing is, why is pushing easier than pulling? Anyone know?

Well I think it's the muscles involved partly. Your biceps are the main muscles involved in a pull-up I believe. With push-ups you have a whole lotta muscles working together to bring you back up. Also, when doing a push-up, some of the weight of your body rests on your feet as well as your arms. Pull-ups are all arms.

Also, when doing a push-up, some of the weight of your body rests on your feet as well as your arms. Pull-ups are all arms.

That could be it... I only just realised that when doing the pull-up the weight of my body was causing my shoulders and elbow joints to sublux (partial dislocations) which are bloody painful after a while. Doing push ups means I am compressing the joints together rather than pulling them apart so less problems. I used to do 1 handed push ups too but couldn't do many because my shoulder started getting hot.

Oh and this was the British Army push-ups. Feet are on a bench while the hands are on the floor to force more weight onto your shoulders. Then there was the one where your partner holds your legs like when you do the wheelbarrow race at school but then you have to do push ups instead.

I do know that the DI used to scream in my ear because I couldn't do many pull-ups. I'm sure that my hearing in my left ear is weaker because he made me deaf with shouting... erm... "YOU BAD BOY, HANTON"... or words to that effect... God, I so hated that man... lol.

Why do drive through ATM's have braille on them?

« Reply #22 on: June 22, 2009, 03:35:50 PM »

215 max, I usually rep 180-190.  As for the Pull up deal, it depends on how you do them, if you do them over hand, then you're using your back and shoulders along with your biceps.  If you do it underhand, it's all bicep, meaning that you do less.  Plus, with pull ups, it's more weight, because in a pushup your legs are taking some of your weight.  But the only way to get better at pull ups is to do pull ups.  I was in the gym every day for a month and I only gained one pull up, after two weeks of doing pull ups 3 times a day, I gained like 5.

Okay,

So on a pull up.. Whats easier? Doing a pull up with your wrists facing you, or flipped around?

It honestly depends, I can do more underhand, but most people I know do them easier overhand.  The back muscle is a lot bigger and stronger, but some people (myself) have weaker backs.  It depends on your body, do them both ways to find out which is easier for yourself.

OK... dumbass here just figured out why pull-ups are hard for me while push-ups aren't.

I HAVE JOINT HYPERMOBILITY... Arrrgghhh... why the frak did I forget this....

Seriously... When I do push-ups I'm pushing the joint's together... this makes the joint stable and means no problemo. When I do pull-ups though it is pulling the joints apart and then I sublux the joint (partial dislocation) which then causes inflammation and pain when the joints click back together... LOTS OF PAIN!.

It was only when I was trying to do some pull ups tonight that it sunk into my thick head lol. Push-ups were fine but pull-ups were just as hard and when my wrist and elbow dislocated I went OUCH and OH FFS... NO FREAKIN WONDER I CAN'T DO THIS!.

Anyone got a decent second hand body they want to swap for my weirdo body? lol

No, I'd say at about 145ish would be my one rep max.
With how big my arms are I should be able to do that no problem.
I'm ashamed, but I rarely bench.
