I found the game tough but fair (when the bugs didn't stuff the game up... but a lot of them have been fixed now).
I just loved the sheer size of the place which had realistic terrain and not something a map maker put together to give artificial sight lines like in MW2. Using a gully to flank an enemy attacking a friendly squad for example and hiding in trees works great because
the AI isn't freakin psychic.
Only downside for me is that I CAN'T FIND MY COPY... I put it somewhere and can't locate it in the bombsite that is my bedroom.

I'm really enjoying it when the bugs don't screw you over, had the AAA in the last level just wouldn't blow up, must of fired 5 rockets into it, thing is I done it the first time but had to reset the god dam level because of another bug and the next time took me almost a dozen tries before I did. Suprised the Ego engine went so well into a shooter, it was designed to be for racing games.
Also this is the only game I've play with fire selectors where using single shot is actually worth it because the long range combat happens alot, and I like that. Took me a while to get used to the bullet drop, should of seen me trying to shoot General Han's second in command, I hit everyone but him.

You got to the bit where there is supposed to be another team doing a diversion yet? Dunno if it is fixed but when I played it the buggers used to drive off and start doing doughnuts off the road and you had to go back to a previous save point. Drove me nuts lol.
You are right about fire selectors being essential... that's another reason why I freakin HATE MW2. I just want to go to single shot for the long shots.
Oh and how are you getting on with your team... has the medic ignored your commands to heal you yet? lol... that was another stupid thing... you would be bleeding out and your medic is right next to you but he is more interested in shooting at the enemy.
Even with all the bugs I found the game to be very interesting and loads of entertainment. Trying to figure out how to do the missions was awesome as it was so close to real field training exercises I took part in during the 70's and 80's but with modern weapons. Suppressing fire and flanking attacks work really well and the AI even knows when to stop the suppressing fire if you blunder into his line of fire... If that was MW2 it would have him shooting your legs off lol.
The way the teammates move from cover to cover is impressive too. They don't push you out of the way like MW2's heavily scripted campaign does. I wish they had gotten more of the bugs but the game is STILL worth getting imho.

My medic went one better, he croched over me and stared blankly at a tree. And the team doing the diversion worked for me, but that level I could walk through anything, including the huge fuel tanks, bullets could also pass through so there was no cover.

They must have fixed the doughnutting diversion then... lol.
I found the only way to do that was to rush to the trigger point for the diversion... If I didn't, the diversion humvee would drive off before I was ready and start spinning like a top.

I think most of those bugs are fixed besides walking through the terrians. Neo once you find your copy we should do some Co-op, the tactics you can pull of using the AI is one thing, imagine two human players,

just got the game, love it. it can be frustrating though. i too had the medic kneel over me and watch me die...prick.
i dont like how rushed i feel in these earlier levels. i was hoping for a bit more flexibility. maybe it will change soon.

Maybe what you don't realise yet is that you don't have to follow the suggestions at all... In fact from the second that you are given control you can run off in the opposite direction if you want... There are no limits on your tactics at all.
You do need to learn to handle your squad effectively though. That is essential. Everything else is optional.

nah. the third level where you have to go tank hunting, i was in some trees waiting for the tanks to come out, and the screen popped up failed mission cause they got to the intersection. this happened about 5 times before i just whipped the sam onto my shoulder and legged it to where they start from and blew them away. tactics out the window. now this is only about 3 minutes into the mission.
oh and also in the second mission i got told to blow up a sam array before one of our choppers came over. i stayed in the village and was killing the enemy troops coming from behind...and what do you know...mission failed because the chopper got shot down.
restart from checkpoint, and leg it as fast as possible to the sam array and i finally made it on the 4th go without the mission failed screen popping up.
im now stuck on the level where i have to evac the downed chopper pilots, i located them, on the way to the evac point my humvee got blown up by the enemy chopper. now when i restart the pilots are nowhere to be found. so i run around looking for them only to be told after 5 minutes that they are dead. mission failed...restart from checkpoint...

Is this the one where you are assaulting a beach along with those Marine APC's? If so, you do know you can jump into the APC and use them to fire AT rounds (you can switch from cannon to AT rounds but don't ask me how as it's been ages lol).
The only thing I hate about the game is the darn bugs that make the game go wonky. Otherwise this is the closest I have come to using real life tactics... and even the times you fail due to a specific event are there to make you learn... Annoying as hell but think outside of the box, flank when possible and lay down covering fire when you have to rock and roll and you won't go far wrong.
A lot of it is in ordering your squad to do stuff... If they don't do what you order it's damned annoying... especially that damned medic.

Ahh, where you are part of a bunch of Humvees and APCs and infantry...
Easy!
Kick a bunch of NPCs out of a Humvee to start with... You need to do a bit of smash and grab. Once in the Hummer you wait until the first lot of your guys hit the entrance to the airport and then accellerate past them and hang a right to get to the tower (is this the one you mean?). Clear the tower (inside and out) before entering using the bumps to hide behind. Then get into the tower and get clear the top floor. Then come downstairs and grab the Charlie-G and smoke the helos and the convoy coming down the valley from the top of the tower.
Sounds easy but it's not.

Annoyingly, if there was not so many bugs, it would be a bloody good game.
Codemasters are going to release another Operation Flashpoint at some point. With the subtitle Red River.
What I found on the gameplay.
Quote
The game will be a tactical first person shooter, similar to its predecessor. The player will have the option of playing the campaign co-operatively. However, the game will not feature competitive multiplayer. The game will not feature a mission editor or SDK for any platform. The player will be able to choose between four classes of Marines to play as, rifleman, grenadier, scout and automatic rifleman, each with their own weapons and abilities. The player will gain experience during gameplay, which can be used to unlock guns, attachments and perks. For example, a scout could acquire an enhancement that will reduce the amount of bullet drop. The game's director Sion Lenton said "Operation Flashpoint: Red River is being built around four player co-op online play, complete with a strong narrative, new enemies and combat scenarios to deliver gameplay that immerses players in the reality of war like never before" The enemies will be able to kill the player with a single shot, apparently depending on where the player is shot. The single player campaign will be divided into three distinct acts. The game will attempt to be as realistic as possible although this would appear to directly contradict the "perks" such as reduced bullet drop and other things stated above.
The final sentence pretty much said what I was thinking, I thought OF was supposed to a realistic shooter, not CoD?

Reduced bullet drop is actually not that bad if you know anything in the way rounds are made. If you increase the gas pressure it increases the bullet velocity which decreases bullet drop so a round change from, let's say, subsonic round to supersonic round would result in reduced bullet drop while staying within real world physics. The downside to the bullet drop would be increased noise from the round when firing.
I'm still hopeful that even with "perks" that it will be realistic. The term though is realistic and not real though.
But you are right about what you said... without the bugs the last OF would be a bloody good game (which is what I said when it came out if you recall). Even without having multiple gun choices it was really good fun (except the bit where you have to defend a village... the rest of the marines defending it must have been made up of nuggets because I had to defend ALL sides it seemed).
I even managed to shoot this helo driver the one time... helo crash landed and didn't go boom... I repaired it, got in and was just taking off going "SWEEEEEEEEEEET" when this bloody git of an AI shot me with a rocket launcher. God was I pissed off lol.

The AI are quite good with those rocket launchers, I've been traveling at full speed in a Humvee at some range and I've been hit square in the side.
And I also found that in the village.

Good way to take out the tankies is to set your guys on suppressing fire and then flank the buggers. Your guys hold fire before they blue on blue you (which is rather unrealistic as you are supposed to be American
).
Have you nicked one of the friendly APC's yet? They are good at defending the village but you can't advance into the village before getting the command to defend it or the rocketmeister gets you with a one shot doozie. Once the command is given though you can nip back and get them and use the buildings for rocket blocking. Take out the ones coming over the hill to the left (from the direction you approach the village) and that stops you getting flanked. The number of times I got flanked in the beginning because the other marines folded like a limp rag really peed me off.

the level with the pilots is powder trail. and the pilots have turned up again, cept now just like guy. they are just running into the open field and just lying down to wait for the bullets to cut them down.

It's a way to tell if a game is buggy, if people other then just Neo get them.
BEcause Neo just finds every single bug in even the best developed game.
There was a reason I was used to test new software and hardware packages... I've told you about the one where I managed to suck all the power from an entire mainframe to my one terminal and the entire NCB computer system kicked everyone else off because I found a way to run more than one nested program at once... but did I tell you the one where I managed to run a disk maintenance routine that managed to cause a disk drive to catch fire... now I'm not talking about hard drives we have today... I'm talking about mainframe hard drives that were the size of a large washing machine... I found that I could click on the high speed option more than once and never thought about it... unfortunately it was a bug that kept doubling the speed of the drive system... First thing the operators in the machine room noticed was this increasingly high pitched noise and then one apparently said to the other "Errr, why is there smoke coming from that drive unit?".
Apparently this was just before it screeched its final death knell and then seized up totally... There was me up in Systems Support going "Damnit... the damned test has crashed" before the phone rang and my boss got yelled at... a lot!
I killed a Mini computer running Wordstar just by crossing my legs (honest)... I killed an ICL terminal just by logging onto it (ending up with half the office trying to log the damned thing off again).
I think I must be the best bug attractor in the WORLD! Unfortunately though I managed to kill so many pieces of hardware (just by normal use) that I got banned from a whole bunch of stuff... "DON'T LET %%%%% NEAR THE DAMNED THING" was heard a lot at one stage.
When I joined the army I went on to do worse... I killed a motorway grader (those things that level the roads), a Muir Hill A5000 tractor (digger/forklift), and Eager Beaver and totalled an enemy radio base by tripping over one of the big antenna guy ropes in the middle of the night through lack of sleep. Antenna came down and wrapped itself around the radio tent and a signals land rover. Put the base out of operation although the loss of the hardware was threatened to be taken out of my payslip.
So yeah... I guess I do have a habit of finding out how to wreck stuff a bit easy.

I FINISHED THE LEVEL!. i went back and started again. saved my arty instead of using it on the sam site, and when i finally got the pilots to leave the village i let loose a harrasing barrage from my howitzer, right on the enemies head. oh yeh before i did that i waited for the transport choppers to fly over and blew them away with my sam. then stole some queen bees from dead enemies and messed up their apcs. after doin all that i basically walked up the hill unopposed.

This game is 100% more thought provoking than any COD "mission on tracks or die" pos. I did it entirely differently - I had me and one of my squad in one AAVP and the other two in another AAVP and just flanked the enemy from the trees the one time. Second playthrough it failed dismally so I did it entirely different (I supported the AI squads first and then went to the aid of my own squad but lost one of them iirc.
I tried loads of times to get a helo and never managed it...
Oh and have you tried the individual scenarios yet... they are just as much fun and not as much yomping. I ended up downloading all the available ones I think... I just found my copy of the game so will probably start playing it again. If there weren't the bugs then I would do Hardcore no sweat... but to die because of one random bullet after an hours play and having to go right back to the beginning sucked ass.... so I said I wouldn't try again. At least in real life you wouldn't have the misery of having to do it all over again... or should that be real death?

We should have a co-op session at some point. Could be fun, then we could all bitch about the bugs together. lol

I tried loads of times to get a helo and never managed it...
i took one out with some scoped rifle i grabbed of a dead guy. didnt even have to reload. switched to auto. let loose and down she went. you have to remember that they are just transport helos, when i hit it with queen bees they were right above me and blew to pieces.

Ditto...
When I meant I tried for a helo I meant shot one down and not blow it up and nick it after repairing it... The QBee missiles always took the damned thing out before I get a chance to take off.

I shot one down and the bugger landed on a humvee and blew up and took the humvee with it... as the other 3 of my guys were in the humvee I went "Oh %&$#".
I've had one helo land on my head, not kill me but knocked me off this big hill and the drop DID kill me... weird that!
In Crisis I had 2 Helos chasing me... The one hit the other and just blew up while the other one was fine... Sometimes these games are just WEIRD!

i dont know how you can think you can go about this game in anyway you choose. im on the mission after hip shot and again im being rushed through. its pissing me off. i have to kill the at teams before the apc's roll through. i tried flanking the machine gun nests, but ran out of time. then tried cutting through the forest and still ran out of time. in the end i jumped in a apc and rolled right up the hill through the mg nests parked just over the crest from the at team, jumped out, shot them, took the emplacement then promptly got head shot. all i can say is grrr..... i want more freedom!

It's not all freedom I agree but there are missions where you are given a huge amount of freedom. The very first mission for example. You can go directly to the beach village to spot for your other teams or go in the entire opposite direction to take out SAMs and stuff.
You did know that previous mission results can affect missions further into the game didn't you? I'm wondering if I managed to destroy stuff in an earlier mission that stopped the guys that are pissing you off now. Do you use the map to finish off all the alternate missions before finishing the main mission?
