Well, it is official. Nintendo announced that they are releasing their new DS. It is going to use new hardware and be about on par with a Wii(ROFL). The 3DS is coming out in less than a year.

I guess this means that this generation is finally coming to a close. It's time to look back on our favorite titles as well as some honorable mentions.

In no specific order...

Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations. The peak of the series. The first game was the most iconic, the second one improved upon the formula but Trials and Tribulations was the apex of Ace Attorney glory. With an incredible story, timeless contradiction finding gameplay and some of the most awesome characters, you have a recipe for excellence. Its biggest weakness is that it has zero replay value. Once you play it through, it is pretty much it. But that one play through will leave a lasting impression. Every minute of its cross examination gameplay will have you on the edge of your bus seat trying to analyze every single angle trying to find that one contradiction. That is worth the buying price alone.

The World Ends With You. Easily Tetsuya Nomura's best game. The creator of this game is known for repetitive button mashers with somewhat intriguing stories. But this fixes that with some of the best combat you will ever encounter in a JRPG. On top of that, it has a genuinely intriguing story that invites you to explore and exploit every single bit of it. It has a beautiful art style and wonderful J-pop music that puts the rest of my list to shame. Highly re-playable and probably one of the only games that you will find yourself intentionally trying to find mobs to kill just to enjoy the incredible battle system.

Demon's Souls. The game that pretty much defines what it means to put gameplay over anything else. Its nuanced gameplay is easy to learn and jump into, but ridiculous to master. It is also incredibly deep with great customization. Its story and presentation are forgettable. But the gameplay and replayability will have you hooked for eons to come. You haven't played Demon's Souls until you've played it twice.

Mass Effect 2.

This game puts Mass Effect 1 to shame. And I didn't think that was possible. The bread and butter of any Bioware game shines through with flying colors, the characters are excellent, the gameplay is masterful, and the presentation is wonderful. It is damn near the perfect game. Just wish that mining wasn't a part of it. But one blemish on an otherwise perfect game(That you can skip once you get the long service medal) is not enough to bump this off of my favorites. It has been a long time since I put over 200 hours into a single player only game. Actually, the last time I did that was in the 5th generation(PSone and N64). The thought that Mass Effect 3 could top this is utterly inconceivable.

Feel free to post your own. Grin

Don't get me wrong, I love Mass Effect 2, but don't you think the AI should be taken out and shot at dawn?? Actual Idiocy rather than Artificial Intelligence.

I don't nitpick AI like you do, Neo.

If you want good AI, play Crysis or F.E.A.R.

Fallout 3: This is first on my list because I love how this game plays out. Post-apocalyptic Washington DC, check. Varying stats to make your character how you like, check. VATS system making things easier or harder to kill from long range, check. Nukes, check. Everything I've wanted in an RP/FPS game, and can be made better with the DLC. Though you're basically shelling +$50 for the combined DLC, it effectively gives the game a longer life within your console or PC (definitely PC because of the GECK mod).

Bullet Witch: The story is nowhere near stellar, in fact it's downright shitty. In my personal opinion, I enjoy the gameplay. You get to use 4 weapons rolled into one (assault rifle, shotgun, sniper rifle, Gatling gun, though not all at once lol), the option to use magic to add an elemental twist to one of the guns, to send out a murder of ravens to confuse the crap out of your foes... oh, and the scenery (buildings, trees, rocks, etc.) is destructible, but crap flying in the air is a double edged sword. Play this if you're not fond of sticky reticule, are masochistic, and are into goth chicks. This is who you play as... so hot.

And that's one of the 5 costumes you can download and put her in (I'd love this game more if there was a nurse outfit)

Too Human: Silicon Knights' twist on Norse mythology with a technological twist. There are five classes to choose from, choose a path for which to stick your stat points in, and kick ass from there. I particularly enjoyed the defender and commando classes because of its differing playstyles that suit me well. I'd recommend it to those who like Norse mythology and big machines, but be warned: there is a bit of inaccuracy concerning the mythology.

FEAR 2: Amongst my personal favorite of the FEAR series, this game takes you away from the viewpoint of the Pointman in FEAR 1 and Extraction Point (the latter being an expansion to FEAR 1) and puts you in the eyes of a mercenary whose mission is to take down the execs of Armacham as well as Alma. It's intriguing fighting against semi-smart AI and the rare mech in this game. The best part about playing this game is actually being in a freaking mech and blasting everything that shoots at you to hell. This game would be a bit better if it didn't have those "repeatedly press B to not die as Alma pins you down and straddles you as she attempts to give you a kiss of death" moments.

I'll add a few more later on. I'm getting bored doing this.

With you on Fallout 3 red, and with Vi on ME2

One of my favorite fantasy RPGs, good storyline, great characters. The expansions added so much more with it. Each one improving the gameplay, even patched in better animations as well as full on robes and cloaks later on. Sadly NWN2 wasn't as good because of huge bugs which still play the game, once a companion went missing completely!

Again another fantasy RPG. Great script, and storyline, specially in the expansion. A few bugs still plague the game. One odd bug is that if you have wardens keep DLC installed an armour set found in awakenings looks like the commander armour and not the new set.

Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory redefined the stealth action genre. Everything from the beautifully paced storyline, to the crisp gameplay made this game stand out as one of the most advanced games of it's time. (released in 2005.)

This was the first game to feature what was essentially 'next-gen' graphics on the Xbox, PS2, and Gamecube, As Ubisoft Montreal pushed the limits of those consoles to create something entirely new and robust.

The gameplay was the spotlight, with each of the 10 missions, being remarkably diverse, and level design that offered countless ways to complete your mission. i could go on and on but i'll stop now. this is one of my favorite games of this generation.

Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
I really really hate to break it to you, dude...but Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory was last generation. ^^;

But it came out in the same year as the 360 so we'll let it slide.

Oh yeah, same thing with neverwinter nights.

You don't -have- to post in the format that I do. Just a brief mention or a short list will do fine.

I'll agree with Red on Fallout 3. Holy shit there was so much content.

Let's not forget Call of Duty 4. No matter how much people complain about gameplay issues, they kept playing. Gotta love that!  ROFL

If you want good AI, play Crysis or F.E.A.R.

I enjoyed FEAR2 and this is one game that was my ideal of a debugged game... every playthough was awesome. Far Cry 2 was another game where the AI performed well.

If I am paying £40 for a game I expect that game to be perfect... but not many games are these days. Back when the original Playstation came out the games were pretty damned close to perfect and I cannot remember thinking "Damn, this bug is ruining the gameplay"... not ever. It's the dumbass management that is pushing out the game before the damned thing is ready, fixing the release date so far ahead of time that if any bugs come along to cause problems you would think they would delay... but most of the time they go ahead and release shoddy code with the attitude that they will "fix it later".

Nowadays though it's so damned hard to play the games without at least some game breaking bug ruining your enjoyment. But the occasional gems like FEAR2 and Far Cry 2 buck the trend and are the better because of it. Games are supposed to be entertainment and not the equivelant of nails down blackboard.

I'll dig through my games and make my list tonight...

Dig through? You mean all of your games are in a box or something? If so, I think it's time you got a DVD rack.

Oh, and the last of the good games in my library:

Call of Duty 4
Mass Effect 1 and 2

Crackdown: I like watching a hulk of an avatar hop around the city like a heavily mutated kangaroo. The driving sucks, but the fighting, shooting and jumping portions of this game are fun. Same goes for escalating high buildings, jumping off of them, then landing on a car as if I were Superman on acid. Oh, the narrator of this game will piss anyone in this forum off.
*narrator* There's an agility course nearby. Complete it and you'll get more agility points.
*narrator* There's a stunt marker nearby. Get through it and you'll improve your driving skills.
^^ All the freaking time. He never shuts up!

the narrator cracks me up in that game man.

he always just interjects that extremely profound voice right into the middle of whatever you're doing.
