Returned Bioshock 2 and got this. And I have to say, I am thoroughly impressed. This is like what Fallout 3 should have been.

It is based on a book, and from this game now I want to read it. The story and characters are really well written and there is absolutely no way to tell what will be around the next corner. There is just so much to this game. One problem I have though is the voice acting. While the excellent writing is easy to see, the voice acting is spotty at best. Especially since they are all voiced by the same 3 people. And you will hear the same lines over and over again. Now for one of my favorite parts, the society. Despite coming after a nuclear apocalypse, the people there make due and still manage to have a good time. There is a feeling of happiness when you enter one of the towns. Mostly from how depressing the rest of the game is.

The graphics are not spectacular on the 360 version, unfortunately. The PC version's graphics are much much better. Especially with DX11 and tessellation. But the whole world is still very compelling despite the visual shortcomings.

Now for the gameplay: It's good. Metro 2033 to STALKER is essentially what Bioshock is to System Shock. Less buggy, more emphasis on sharp gameplay but somewhat less deep. But it is still very very good. It feels pretty realistic too. But one of the things that impressed me a LOT is that the game will let you fail. By that I mean if say...you screwed up an escort mission, you don't just restart until you succeed. You have to live with the consequences of failing that mission. Of course, dying means you have to start over though. This element of gameplay actually makes me feel like I am involved. Even more so than a lot of games that give you choice. You also have a lot of freedom in how to pursue your objectives. You can take an action approach or stealth approach, it is entirely up to you.

Now for the gripes: The navigation is spotty at best, the programmer's inexperience shows. There are a few more bugs than in most games and the gas mask mechanic(That is, they only last so long) can get annoying. But other than that, it is a pretty solid game.
Okay, one more thing. You meet a character early on named Bourbon. And he is awesome. He is like this game's Han Solo. A very interesting character. They just kill him off  Cry. Might be a result of the fact that I was spotted though.

Is it worthy of shelling $60 over, or is it, like Bioshock 2, a rental? When I read about this game, saw some gameplay videos about it, and I was thinking, "Ooh, Ukrainian Fallout 3, but with a more survival horror feel."

Oh, and I freaking hate escort missions lol.

Honestly, this is not worth a 60 dollar purchase.

But then again, I can only name three games this generation that are worth it.

I find it funny that every conversation I see on this game tells me everything about the game except how long it is. So, how long does it take to finish and how replayable is it?

I rented this and it seems to be a pretty generic nuke survivors vs monsters... except for this wierd alien that keeps popping up.

I was enjoying it right until I reached Dry Station... then a bloody stupid game glitch turned this one soldier into an invincible sod. Six clips from an AK, 10 shotgun rounds to the face and he just would not die and so I keep dying. I then did a search on the net and yup... other people have noticed this invincible enemy.

Oh well... reasonably decent up until then but after about 15 retries I gave up. Poor level design. Fallout 3 was 10x better imho.

ROFL... Just found this...

Quote
It's dark, and my flashlight is off. The game has told me that enemies can't see me in the dark so long as they're not looking at me, so I decide to sneak up on a bandit. He's a scout, and I can see his bandit friends behind him. I'm gonna shoot him in the back of the head with a shotgun, which will alert his friends, but hey -- at least he'll be dead, and then I can think about flanking them and opening up with my inaccurate SMG from close-range.

I sneaked up. Pointed my gun at his head. Fired four times, from point-blank range.

He turned around and killed me in three shots.

...and a year and a gaming PC later, I finally get around to buying this game for what amounts to pocket change.

So far, I'm enjoying this game. Surprisingly enough, I don't feel sick when playing this game, even while sprinting (when the game sways the most, apparently). For that, I am very thankful. Most guns are inaccurate, the crouch button is at an annoying location on my keyboard (left ctrl key) and I was forced to relocate it to a more convenient spot (hooray for mouse buttons). The game is very much like Crysis: more of a benchmark for high-end computers at their time(s) than a game, as the optimum requirements for Metro 2033 involve 8 gigs of RAM, an Intel i7 CPU and a high-end GPU.

I have not beat this game yet, as I have plenty others to play and give impressions on.

And I apologize for necro-threading, as a new thread wasn't worth it.

Thankfully the game's cheap and good for its current on-sale price at Gamersgate and Steam.

I actually bought this in the bargain bucket as well so I could finish it... Can't remember if I did now heh.

I do remember the one part that had an invincible enemy I wasted most of my ammo on thinking he was just really tough. Then I found  that the only way to win was to run away. Silly level design.

After I got past that level I enjoyed the game IIRC. Oh and I don't mind necro posts if they add to the thread and are not just necro for necro sake.

Have you got Crysis 2 yet Red? Remember you can turn off head bob entirely.
