My Home Automation computer was flagging that it needed to do some windows update for XP. I have been putting them off for ages but I decided to go ahead with them...

So the updates install and suddenly my automation is totally dead... or seems it.

Turned out that all the IR codes received had changed for some reason... EVERY... SINGLE... ONE!!!! Getting the system to learn all the codes took frickin HOURS to input. To say I am not pleased is an understatement.

This is the problem with PC's... you have to update them to stop the hackers yet you run the risk of buggering up your system if you do. It's one reason I hate PC's.

At the moment I'm in the process of rolling back the updates... I'm just hoping that the bloody System Restore works...

Ouch. I keep a volume license of XP Pro at hand in case my PC gets completely destroyed by something, then I do the first few rounds of updates and leave it at that.

Well the rollbacks didn't work and for some reason when I run some of the programs they just die right away... now as one of these suicidal programs is Norton Ghost I am shafted... Looks like a complete rebuild to me...

Oh well, the majority of my automation software still works... it's just the IR input that has had all the bloody codes changed I think. Now as that PC has been running slower than ever I think I will just put on a cutdown version of XP (using XP Lite that I bought legitimately yonks ago) and then lock in the changes, turn the firewall onto maximum and turn auto updates off... If it works, don't fix it. I'll then make multiple backups and leave it at that and put the backup hard drive in a fire safe lol.

I hate computers... but my home is sooooooo crappy without the automation. For example I keep sitting down on the sofa and wondering why the automation doesn't ask me what I want to do and the touch screen next to my seat is dead...

DAMNIT!!!! I'VE GONE BACK TO THE 20th CENTURY!!!!  Awww man

Holy Sheep Oh crap! Hey, be gentle, I'm new here...

Oh god... I feel like such a PLONKER!

I must have sat on my universal remote and switched it to another profile and not noticed it heh... Once I switched it back it's all working fine again.

Thank god I noticed... I was just about to do a hard drive format and start again heh.
