Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, a 43 year old mother of two, was convicted in May 2006 of having an “illicit relationship” with two men and received 99 lashes as her sentence. Despite already having been punished, she has now been further convicted of “adultery” and she and sentenced to death by stoning.

She is currently being held on death row in Tabriz Prison, north-west Iran, and faces imminent execution. Around July 7th , following international protests, officials in Tabriz asked the head of Iran’s judiciary to agree that her sentence of stoning to death be converted to execution by hanging.

I believe in freedom to practice religion... but this is just barbaric. THIS IS THE 21st CENTURY PEOPLE! NOT THE STONE AGES!

Not really... I know that she isn't getting stoned but they are still holding her...

It is clear Sakineh remains ingrave risk… PLEASE sign this petition  which calls on the Iranian authorities to clarify her current legal status, demands that the authorities enact legislation that bans stoning as a legal punishment, and eliminates other forms of the death penalty for “adultery” such as fogging or imprisonment.

The problem is who are we to tell them how to make their laws? They're held back by their religious beliefs, they're not part of a democracy and until they break free from their religious doctrines they won't have any semblance of a fair society. Even then, it'll take many, many decades for women to be "equal" to men.

Look at America. The hatreds, the distrust, the old beliefs are still rampant and it's been almost 140 years since slavery ended, almost 90 years since suffrage was enacted and yet there's plenty of racism and sexism. Just because laws are put in place, or international pressures are applied, doesn't mean people will ever truly change.

I know you and everyone who signed mean well but signing a petition online is just about the lamest amount of support one could give when you consider what true action would do (I'm guilty of signing some, too). And in the Middle East, those who act either die, get imprisoned, or wind up being the bad guy eventually. I'm sure Ahmadinejad didn't bow under the pressure of a petition, he bowed under the guise of other governments condemning this silliness.

This is about medieval laws being practiced in the 21st century. Things like stoning women and honour killings have no place in today's society, yet they still happen.

You must think highly of me if you think the Canadian army is mine.  I don't care about what the middle eastern country's do cause those are their laws and have been so for a hell of a long time and they have done nothing but fight in support of their laws and way of life.  Why would i want to stick my nose in there when they are just as willing to fight each other as they are anyone else.

Also, didn't you realise I removed the previous post on purpose. I thought you would get the hint but it looks like it failed to sink in. What if that someone who was being stoned to death was your mother? Would you still pay to stone her to death? Is it still cool? How about your sister (if you have one). Would it be cool to stone her to death?

This is why religion and politics shouldn't mix. A culture is largely influenced by its most common religion, culture influences politics, politics messes with everything in a country.

For instance, Prop 8 was overturned in California. Who are we as a society to say who can and can't get married based on their genitalia? What happened to freedom? People who are afraid of their own shadows shouldn't go outside, let alone tell other people that their shadow will devour them. We let some fears cloud our judgment but I'm pretty damn sure that the American forefathers explicitly wanted a separation of church and state FOR THESE REASONS.

Each religion has its own agenda, it wields power as easily as we breathe air, it makes us think we're not worthy unless we devote 100% of our lives to a higher power (and devote our pocketbooks to the church).

I look forward to the day when a time viewer gets built (not as so outlandish as time travel) and it turns out that most of histories "prophets" and "holy men" are either suffering from medical conditions or are out an out con men. Know what will happen to the religions?

Taliban 'kill adulterous Afghan couple'
A man and a woman who allegedly had an adulterous affair have been stoned and killed in the northern Afghan province of Kunduz.

The punishment happened in a crowded bazaar on Sunday in the Taliban-controlled village of Mullah Quli.

The Taliban have not commented on the public killing, but it was confirmed by local officials and witnesses.

This month the Taliban also reportedly flogged and killed a pregnant widow in western Baghdis province.

A spokesman for Afghan President Hamid Karzai, Waheed Omar, said if the incident was confirmed it would be condemned in the strongest terms by the government.

"Even in Islam this [stoning] has to be done through proper judicial systems," he said.

"The Taliban do not represent the country, they do not represent the Afghan judiciary, and they have no right to punish anyone even if it is for the right cause, which in this case it is not."

So basically the Taliban did wrong because they didn't follow the correct stoning procedure... Sometimes it makes me wonder if they still think the bloody world is flat.
