Dunno how to give a damn.

« on: October 02, 2010, 03:50:54 AM »

If everything goes according to plan, I might be able to get a new computer in Q1 2011. So far, this seems like it would be an optimal machine for me. I'm not looking for a beast of a machine, as I don't need all that power a higher-grade PC would net me (since I only play things like Guild Wars, Perfect World, etc.).

Sorry if I sound confusing, but I wanna know what you guys think about this computer. Could I get (or make) something better with a $1100 budget? I'm not very tech-savvy.

I would have thought with a $1100 budget you would be able to get a really good gaming rig. Forget the flash cases etc and spend it on the actual core technology and it will be really awesome.

I think the things you want to look for are a top GPU and a decent multi core CPU to make it last a while... ie spend more on the graphics card...

I going to agree with Neo.

$1100 is about 700 pounds here, I could make quite a good computer with that, specially if you think about taking parts from your old computer which could be useful. But I suppose if you don't believe you have the time or the confidence to do so.

Whew, the computer I could build with $1100. Hell, even $600.

Anyway, building a computer is very intimidating but you won't ever get to know what's in your computer better than by building it. See if any of your friends have built a PC before and ask if they'd either help you buy components or buy a pre-built PC. If they know anything about computers, they'll steer you down the right path (I just hope they don't work at a place that sells PCs and try to sell you something so they look good at their job).

Unfortunately, a sizable chunk of the price of a pre-built PC comes from licensing Windows and other software packaged with it (that normally turns out to slow the computer down majorly once you're up and running) and you don't even get a real license for the operating system, you basically get a trial copy....you try it until you need to reformat and then you're boned.

As for pre-builts, try to stay away from Dell and HP. Dell loves to outsource components to other companies with proprietary pieces and drivers that won't respond to basic XP drivers if something goes wrong (unless you have a back-up disc). In all honesty, they're not nearly as bad as they were years ago but I still steer people away from buying either. They have too much bloatware installed and some of it can be tricky to get rid of.

The computer you linked is more than adequate for what games you listed but it can run so much more. That CPU is pretty much a beast, the hard drive, ram, and video card are all good, and there's also gigabit LAN (I'm just nerding out about that, you won't notice a difference unless you know what to look for). There's also expansion slots for audio cards or other PCI items. The price is a little high for its value but pre-builts are like that.

However, make note there is no monitor included. They rarely are.

Edit: I learned the easy way that my previous build had multiple inconsistencies (as well as multiple incompatible parts). The build above was suggested to me, and it seems like it can take on a lot and laugh.

Those components should be fine together and last you the next four years at bare minimum.
