Well this game started out OK and I like it except for one reason...

THE AI IS TOTALLY MORONIC.

I thought that they couldn't make the AI worse than in Dragon Rising but they did. For example, there is this one bit where you are facing wave after wave of enemies. Your marines are on a balcony behind sandbags and shooting down at them. Sounds simple. But your marines AI goes mental and they start running along the balcony. Now you would think "Not too bad" but instead of running BEHIND YOU they keep knocking you out of the way, ruining shots galore. In fact nearly every time you get into a good shooting position you have friendly AI's (not necessarily your squad) move and stand in front of you which ends up with you getting shot.  Head Banger! DOH!

You can't even trust the AI to do the right thing so you end up running around the base like an idiot trying to defend the entire base on your own.

This game has the possibility of being an awesome game but it is ruined by this stupid AI. The missions are based in huge maps once again and the immersion factor is decent but ruined by USMC soldiers taken from an insane asylum.

Even games like Goldeneye have better AI than a lot of the games out these days.

Somebody on the Codemasters forum figured out what they based the AI on...

Yeah... 4 person Co-Op like with DR.

The game itself is enjoyable but they kind of ruined the open country method of Dragon Rising and made it more linear. I guess some gamers was crying that nobody was holding their hands hehe. Maps are still huge but but you get ferried between combat in the back of an open top Humvee (how dumb is that... snipers anyone?) while your Sarge yells at you about his 10 rules of warfare to keep you alive. If that was a real guy he would have got fragged by his own squad in next to no time lol.

They have included the Fire Team Engagements from DR but changed it into 4 types of combat now. Probably so they can include new FTE's in a DRM pack.

The missions are long and can take around an hour to complete. The only pain in the ass is the long Humvee rides where all you can do is look at the scenery (without being able to look all around) and listen to the annoying Sarge. Would have been better to have the entire squad chatting all the time instead of listening to the monologues from Sarge.

Weaponry is again limited but you do get more than DR. You can outfit the team with what weapons and addons you want. If you want to use all riflemen you can. Or all Snipers, one of each or whatever you want. I used 3 machine gunners and myself as a rifleman... I got the team to lay down supressing fire and my god was the enemy keeping their heads down while I flanked them hehe.

I only paid £25 instead of £40 for my copy of Red River... and it was worth every penny imho. I've enjoyed it loads more than LA Noire.

I've just got hold of Red River. I've played the first three missions and am quite enjoying. Better then DR in my opinion. Going through your inventory is better and allowing me to select a kit before the mission is nice. I generally have two riflemen, including me, a grenadier and a guy with an LMG. I like balance but saw little reason for a sniper at this moment, though have found one or two places one would of been handy.

Wait until you get a sniper scope on your M16. Things pwns the battlefield better even more so than the M14 imho.

I tend to have the M16 with the nade launcher and the long range scope and set to single shot and the secondary weapon I use the M4 with silencer and holoscope. When you get the armour piercing ammo the enemy are all going down with one shot, one kill.

The support airstrikes, mortars and missiles can be a bit awkward. I had one of the AI guys walk in front of me when I called out a mortar strike... Ooops. Talk about danger close. I ran like hell and got out but two of my squad didn't. I got the "Danger Close" achievement out of it though. Cheesy

There was this one bit where the enemy turned suicidal and a whole bunch of them jumped into the river. All because I had chosen a way the AI didn't understand (basically I ignored my orders and followed Alpha instead heh).

The game is pretty damned good when you work out what you can do. Sometimes turning off the suggestion route markers can make you figure out stuff a lot better. It can also screw the enemy AI up something rotten as well.

For instance there are some bugs that are not fixed other than by restarting the game. I had one where Charlie company had driven their Humvee onto a rock and couldn't move which meant the next phase wasn't triggered. Another one where I was driving a Humvee along the road and next second I was standing on the road and the Humvee was on the other side of the map with my guys still in the car heh. Weird stuff like that.

Oh god... I just saw the most STUPID AI situation that sums up Red River.

So Soto gets tagged and I turn around to see what is up. I see an enemy run behind a wall right next to Soto's body. Then one of the other AI teammates goes to heal Soto AND TURNS HIS BACK TO THE ENEMY... and of course he gets tagged and bleeding out on the floor next to Soto's body... then my last AI teammate goes to heal that teammate and also turns his back to the enemy and also gets shot in the back of the head.

Now is it me or is this a bunch of 10 year old kids, dressing up as Marines... no... that's wrong... 10 year olds would have loads more intelligence that the AI in this game shows.

It's the repeated commands you have to give like "Take cover" and the dumb idiots take cover BUT ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE WALL... You say "Suppressing Fire" and they mill around like gits and you have to repeatedly tell them to suppress the target until they finally go "Ohhhhhh... you want us to surpr...THUD (DEAD)".

I've found whent this starts happening there is a fix... you have to turn off the Xbox and reboot and the game plays OK for a while before going dumb again.

The classic dumbness of the checkpoint saves is also annoying. Just gave up because I had nearly finished the mission and I get hit with a tank round, behind a wall. No way to avoid it. So I reload the checkpoint and it's got me pretty much surrounded by PLA and my guys run off to defend a building which is my last order to them... If I give them an order to defend the position we are in I'm pretty much dead on the floor by the time I get the order out. If I start opening fire my guys have run off and I am overwhelmed. No alternative but to restart the mission because the checkpoint screwed up. Facepalm time!

This game could be pretty awesome if they could fix the AI. Unfortunately the latest patch has seemed to make it dumber than ever.
